Where the Wild River Runs

The Wild River runs through Herberton and was very tame when we visited today. Apparently it can rise to 7 metres in the wet and live up to its name. Herberton is a small country town with a wonderful historic village complex - Historic Herberton Village (entry fee of $27).  We spent at least a couple of hours there.

We decided to go to nearby Irvinebank for lunch. It was once a prosperous mining town of several thousand but is now a sleepy backwater with a combined pub/general store/petrol station. Two of the old buildings are most impressive. The 14k of gravel road to get there was reasonable and we took it slowly.

We looped back into Atherton and called into the Mt Hypipamee Crater national park to see Dinner Falls and the crater which was formed by a gas explosion in a volcanic pipe. Naturally Barbara took the longer circuit track whereas I headed back to the motorhome by the quickest route.
