Waterfalls and Rainforest

You really feel like you are in the tropics when you walk the paths through dense rainforest and see the forest covering the hills to the horizon. Strangling vines, tall trees, leaf littered forest floors, the sound of birds in the trees or the roar of waterfalls, that touch of humidity in the air (even in winter) - all part of the wet tropics. Thankfully we had a cloudy but dry day today. Apparently the tablelands has had rain over the last 5 weeks, so our visit has been timed just right.

We saw the most amazing strangler fig - even stranger, we heard someone talking about a better one! We'll let you know what we think once we see the Cathedral Fig later this week.

Water was flowing freely over Milla Milla Falls:

We caught glimpses of the North Johnstone River from Crawford's Lookout and Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway:

The Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway includes a cantilevered walkway and a tower walk as well as a canopy walk. We spent an hour and a half wandering the pathways. Barbara, naturally, climbed the 100 steps up the tower. I was exhausted just watching her.

Scenes from Mamu:

I thought we had finished the day tasting and buying Gallo cheeses and chocolates. Barbara, however, decided she needed a brisk walk to Widow's Peak for views of Atherton and surrounding countryside.(The walk starts at the back of our van park - 2k uphill then 2k back.)
