Searching for the Elusive Cassowary

Barbara was up bright and early this morning to walk around Paronella Park. She had the park to herself.

We only had just over 200kms to drive today and we took all day to do it. We were told that Cassowary are often seen at Etty Bay and Mission Beach, so we had to visit these. Sadly we saw many Cassowary road signs but no real birds. We leave their territory tomorrow so maybe next time!

The side trips were worth it though. Etty Bay was nearly deserted when we arrived and beautiful. Mission Beach has a mini Hastings Street vibe with a well placed van park to walk to shops and restaurants. It's definitely a place to stay next time. We drove further north to Bingil Bay - yet another sleepy and pretty spot.

Tully was just a quick lunch break and a big gold gumboot (although Barbara and I would argue it was closer to khaki). Tully Gorge is 40km away and was too big a detour for us this trip.

The foreshore in Cardwell has been given a massive facelift following the destruction from Cyclone Yasi in 2011. There is a long paved walk along the foreshore with magnificent views of Hinchinbrook Island.

After a quick stop at a lookout over Hinchinbrook off highway one, we finally arrived at our beachfront van park near Rollingstone.
